AgeWell: Digital Photography Beginners

During this workshop you will explore ways you can take the first steps towards capturing those perfect images.

Topics may include:

• Smartphone or DSLR - getting the best of your device



• What makes a great photo?



• Top tips for composition



• Get snapping - progress through practice



• What is depth of field and how can it transform my photos?



• Shutter speed and lights



• Tips for photographing children

This course will encourage you to increase your confidence and ability to make informed choices about personal and professional issues, helping to reduce social exclusion and isolation.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community.

Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

There are no pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. 

 Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you. 

Your tutor will work with you to review your progress towards achieving your goals during the session.

This is a Beginners course that has been designed especially for those aged over 60 years, who want to make the most of their digital camera or smartphone and have no experience in the subject or very basic knowledge of the subject.

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder. Please bring your digital camera (any necessary cables) and the instruction manual.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.


Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.


Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.


Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
