What the course is about

In your class you will:




  • Work on your reading skills, including reading for meaning, proof-reading and comprehension

  • Work on your writing skills, including planning your writing, writing for different purposes, spelling, grammar and punctuation

  • Work on your communication skills including speaking and listening activities and assessments

  • Complete work in the classroom and as homework to prepare you for the Functional Skills assessment.



This is a course leading to a qualification. This course is paid for by public funding and you will be required to complete a recognised City & Guilds English assessment. We will also, where appropriate, help you to improve other skills such as maths, ICT and skills needed for employability.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

This is an accredited course. You will be required to complete assessments in some or all of these subjects:




  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking and Listening



You will work towards an exam or portfolio. Once completed your work will be marked internally or externally and quality assured. If successful you will receive a nationally recognised certificate. Personal goals for you to work on in class will be agreed with your tutor and these will be reviewed regularly.

  • You want to gain an English qualification at the right level for you.

  • You want to attend a small, friendly class and work at your own pace and level

  • You want to improve your communication, reading and writing skills for employment and/or personal reasons

  • You are able to attend every week and complete home study tasks between sessions



You do not need any previous experience or qualifications in English to attend this course. IMPORTANT - On this course it is essential that you attend regularly and complete any homework given. Exam entry is dependent upon full attendance and successful completion of practice papers. Materials and costs

You will need an A4 folder, A4 lined paper and pens. The course is Government funded so there is no cost for the course. PLEASE NOTE - If you fail to turn up for an exam you will be charged an exam fee of £30.

English, maths and computing skills: all of our courses support the development of relevant English, maths and computing skills.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
