A welcoming and friendly workshop, designed to increase awareness of mental health, potential risk factors, signs and symptoms and the importance of protecting and maintaining own mental health, and strategies of how to do this.

What the course is about

During this session you will receive both group and individual support that will focus on better understanding mental ill health.



Topics will include:




  • What is mental health vs mental ill health? 

  • What might increase the risk of becoming mentally unwell? 

  • Exploring different mental health conditions

  • Exploring strategies to strengthen and maintain mental wellness 

  • Sources of support and signposting 



All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading, and some writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course.

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom or on-line setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.



Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.



This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.  



There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a beginner’s course, and you will be expected to have no experience in the subject or very basic knowledge of the subject.



This course could be helpful for people who are supporting someone, or experiencing low mood, anxiety and/or stress.

Materials and costs

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder.



If this course is online you will also need access to a laptop or PC and good WiFi connectivity.



During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
