In this class you will use a variety of art materials to learn a range of creative techniques, within a relaxed and supportive environment.

What the course is about

This course is fantastic for those just starting out using mixed media to create pieces of art. 



Topics may include: 




  • Use a variety of different art materials, such as acrylics, watercolour paint, inks, pastels, watercolour pencils and much more. 

  • Combine some of these materials to create a painting in a subject of your choice. 

  • Create many special effects using the above mediums plus additives and provides lots of opportunities to experiment with techniques such as marbling, mono printing, wax resist, collage and impasto. 



A range of subjects can be included seascapes, landscapes, animals and birds, underwater scenes, people, and abstracts. 



All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course. 



Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people. 



Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience. 



This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.

There are no Pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.   



There is no qualification or examination attached to this course. 

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This is a Beginners course, and you will be expected to have no experience in the subject or very basic knowledge of the subject, including some memory of the subject from school. 

Materials and costs

You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder.



You should also bring any relevant art materials that you have available to the first session, but before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor.



You are advised to wear old clothes or an overall to protect your clothes.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
