Sewing Machine Skills: Step 2

During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about Sewing Machine Skills. 

This course follows on from Step 1 (or equivalent) and will help you maintain the skills and knowledge you have already whilst also introducing some new elements and activities.

Topics that may be covered include: 

• Operate and maintain a sewing machine safely 


• Gain a greater understanding of seams, hems and fastenings 


• Explore the use of applique 


• Explore the use of bias binding and piping 


• Shape a flat piece of fabric in a variety of ways to create three dimensions 


• Find additional ways to determine stitching position 


• Make a sewn craft item following instructions and simple patterns 


• Choose a greater range of fabrics suitable for beginner projects 

The classes are welcoming and informal, and a great way to meet like-minded people. The small class sizes, ensure individual attention. 

There will be opportunity to choose a practical project to be completed from the selection offered by the tutor. Projects are chosen to give you the chance to put into practice the skills and knowledge that you will be taught during this course.

You will have the option to adapt choices made to suit your ability and any opportunity you may have to carry out additional work on your project.

This course can help you to cut your costs and by recycling and renewing, make the most of your existing wardrobe and furnishings making a contribution to a greener environment and helping you financially. 

All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course. 

Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people. 

Practice at home is advisable to enhance your learning experience. 

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course. 

There are no Pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. 

Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course. 

There is no qualification or examination attached to this course. 

This is a Step 2 course, and you will be expected to have knowledge and experience in the subject and can understand and complete simple tasks in the subject. As a guide, please review the Step 1 course information sheet. 

You will need to bring your own sewing machine as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home. Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual. 

You will need a basic sewing kit. Advice about appropriate choices will be given during the first session. 

Before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor. You will be expected to purchase your own materials as the course progresses. 

You will need to provide the materials for the project item that you choose to make. 

You may find a notebook and pen useful 

During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible. 

Following the successful completion of this course, your next learning step is Sewing Machine Skills Step 3.

Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.

Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.

Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.

Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
