English for speakers of other languages – ESOL
Improving your English will help you get more out of everyday life in the UK.
ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. These courses are specifically designed for non-native English speakers who are looking to start learning English or to improve their skills. It is ideal for adults who have recently moved to the UK or want to start learning the English language.
All learners enrolling on an ESOL course must undergo an admission session first to help us understand your ability and put you on the best course to help you achieve. Please call us on 01202 123444 if you’d like any assistance.
Are ESOL courses free?
Our ESOL courses may be free if you are unemployed, in receipt of benefits or on a low wage (under £20,319). If none of these requirements apply to you, you can pay for your course in instalments. For more information about our finance options, visit our finance page.
How long is an ESOL course?
Before you enrol on a course you may need to have a telephone admission session with one of our team, to assess your level. Once we have assessed your level, we will be able to get you on the right ESOL course. If you are a complete beginner, we enrol you directly on to a course. Depending on the course you are studying, a course could be between 10 – 35 weeks.
How many levels in ESOL?
We offer 5 levels of ESOL courses to choose from starting at pre- entry (beginner) Entry level 1, 2 and 3 and Level 1 and 2. All these courses allow the learner to gain an ESOL qualification at the end of the course. We have writing classes too which focus specifically on writing and grammar. We also offer conversation classes where you can practise your skills in a friendly, supportive environment which will improve your learning and understanding of English. These courses have no qualification or assessment and therefore are perfect for learners who want to improve their skills. As well as these, we have a reading group for practising your reading skills and expanding your vocabulary. The tutor suggests a book and the group meets once a month with the tutor to discuss the book.
Can ESOL lead to GCSE?
GCSE English can be the next step after a Level 2 ESOL qualification. If you are at a lower level of English, our Entry Level courses are the perfect starting point to progress into a level 1 or 2 ESOL qualification. Many learners also start with level 1 and then go on to level 2. Our tutors can discuss your goals with you and help you get there.
