Functional Skills

Functional Skills are qualifications in English and Maths that equip learners with practical skills required in everyday life.

Why study Functional Skills?

A Functional Skills qualification is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life, education and work. It is particularly suitable for people who do not have a GCSE Grade 4 (C), and who want to gain a nationally recognised qualification. Studying Functional Skills is not just about developing essential Maths and English knowledge, but also learning when and how to apply your knowledge in real life situations.

Our courses are held at venues across Dorset, at various times in the day and evening. Most courses start in September, but there are more opportunities to enrol later in the year. Fast-track options are also available, and exams are scheduled regularly throughout the year.

Gaining a Functional Skills qualification would give you:

New job prospects

A Functional Skills qualification at Level 2 is viewed as equivalent to a GCSE Grade 4 (C) by many employers so could help you gain new employment opportunities.

Further study options

After studying a Functional Skills course, you could go on to study Maths or English at GCSE level, or another subject of your choice at a higher level.

More confidence

Having a qualification reflects your hard work and proves to both yourself and others that you have strong Maths and English skills.
